_ LOVE,
LOVE, LOVE Whitehall Candle Co.! The candles themselves are SO wonderful.... clean burning, definitely more
"green", and smell wonderful. The white and glass jars illuminate
beautifully and look fabulous on the mantel, bookshelf, and even kitchen. I
can't get over the beautiful gift wrapping- really makes the candle classy and
is very well-received. I do have to admit- I bought the Blackberry & Sage
(my fav scent) with a future gift in mind and ended up opening it one night
when I was in need of a little something special for myself. Let me tell you-
it did not disappoint... it was a great pick-me-up and I've been burning it
every night since. Guess I'll have to make another trip to this adorable little
shop to get a few for actual gifts... darn!!! ;-)

Great candle...the scent is amazing. Whitehall Candles are my favorite and the only candles I buy for my home and for gifts. Good for the environment too since they are soy!

A knack for elegant candles...
Trying to make candles from crayons and his mother's perfume didn't yield the greatest results for Shawn Cox as a child. But more recently, a lesson on TV from Martha Stewart set him straight. He can now make elegant scented candles from natural soy wax, and in may he opened the Whitehall Candle Co. in downtown Walnut Creek.
Cox makes all the candles in his garage, where he set up shop several years ago with the intent of making candles as gifts. He began selling selling them at fairs and was on the way to starting a business when housing sales began to fall and he was laid off from a title company. "it was a blessing disguise," he said. Whitehall candles are colorless - "neutral, clean and simple," he says - and scented with a variety of oils and synthetic additives; about 46 aromas are available throughout the year. White tea Ginger, pomegranate and tuberose are among the most popular, and spice pumpkin is now in big demand, "it hard to keep hold of that," Cox said. The basic Whitehall Candle ($17) comes in a glass jar, which can be washed out and returned for a credit. The line includes voitives in small tumblers at 5.50 each. He is an old soul; you feel that pretty quickly. It's like he's from another era - maybe a friend of Laura Ingalls, the late author of the "Little House" children's books. But Shawn Cox is very much in the 21st century, and yet still waxes poetic - literally.
The Antioch resident is a full-fledged candle maker, and creating candles is everything to him; it's his hobby, job, favorite form of meditation and his passion. "I find it very meditative. I always feel very comfortable while working," he says. "I get a great sense of satisfaction from it." A few years ago, though a close friend, I met Shawn and was immediately taken with this candles. And, then, even more so with him. How many candle makers does one know? His affair with candles runs deep. "When I was about 8, I used to swipe my mom's half used pillar candles, melt the wax in the microwave, add a piece of crayon for color, a splash of mom's perfume and wick made out of whatever string I could find," he says, "Thank goodness my mother never lit the little gifts I made for her; they probably would have exploded!" The 32-year-old says he's always been artistic and thinks making candles is an extension of that. Like a chef, the chandler (that's fancy talk for candle maker, I just learned) goes through lots of trial and error to find the right fragrance recipe. His cookbook, if you will, has about 200 fragrances that he mixes to make his lovely flaming bouquets. His first "real" candle was a spice blend of cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg. "I still love that smell," he says. But other mixtures weren't so aromatic. For example "Brittany Lane was to be a nostalgic candy peach scent. "it smelled great out of the bottle," he says, "but in a candle, it smelled like pop-corn, butter and peaches." Botched batches aside, right now his favorites (out of the 40 he offers) are White Tea & Ginger, Pomegranate Nectar and Tuberose. While he adores the process, he says it's not for everyone. "It's labor- intensive and expensive," he says. "There aren't a lot of candle makers." And, with a kind of supply and demand in the field comes competition and secrecy. He says anyone can find the info to make candles, but it's the mixing of details that can make a sought-after candle. Right now, Shawn is furiously working on his holiday collection which includes a delicious smelling egg nog and a Christmas-tree scent that almost makes one feel the pine needles. An artesian as well as an Eco-friendly creator, Shawn makes his creations from soy, which burns cleaner and longer then the traditional paraffin. Depending on the type of candle he's making, a 2-pound pillar can take six hours from start to finish. "Making candles is very time-consuming and tedious work; it's not for everyone," he says. "But for me it's very relaxing. I grab my cup of tea, queue up the iPod with some Ella Fitzgerald, and just get lost in the process." _Ed and I went to a family wedding in Napa Valley, California. Between
wedding activities, we went out to explore the area and stumbled upon an
outdoor fair in downtown Napa. We checked out products from several
local shops and businesses but one company that I loved was the
Whitehall Candle Co. The unique scents of the candles grabbed my
attention right away. I could tell immediately that the candles were
made with great care and attention to detail. I am in love with several
scents and have been ordering candles from Whitehall since I found them
in Napa on that beautiful fall day. And the fact that Shawn M. Cox,
chandler (candle maker) extraordinaire, has amazing customer service and
is just an all-around nice guy, makes me want to continue to support
his business. He really does wonderful work. My favorite candles are
Harvest Crush, Augusta Magnifica (Gardenia) and Stargazer. I am dying to
try Pomegranate Nectar and Plumeria. Yes, Shawn will be getting a call
from me soon!

I love Whitehall Candle Company. Hand-made with natural oils by Antioch's Shawn Cox, the soy-based candles are better than paraffin (a by-product of petroleum) and delightfully fragrant. Shawn's been mixing these yummy-smelling goods for nearly 10 years. Even the simple-yet-classic packaging is earth-friendly. And when you return your empty glass container, you get a credit. At only $17, these are a major steal. (Shhhh, don't tell shawn!) Whitehall Candle Co. 1-888-437-7773; www.whitehallcandleco.com
